The big news of the week is that the PlayStation 5. With the new generation of gaming around the corner, now is the time to catch up on the games from the PlayStation 4 era that you may have missed. And Sony has two concurrent sales on its PlayStation Store to help you do just that.
There’s the Under $20 sale, which is what it says on the tin. Then there’s the Double Discount sale, which takes a chunk off the price of several blockbuster games — and then doubles the discount for PlayStation Plus members. There are hundreds of games on sale, but below are our picks.
Western RPGs don’t come with a much higher pedigree than Obsidian Entertainment, the team behind Fallout: New Vegas. The Outer Worlds is an alternate-reality game set in 2285. In this universe, Theodore Roosevelt never busted corporate giants and those giants essentially ended up ruling space. It’s a well-written, engrossing tale and it’s $30 for PlayStation Plus members (50% off) or $45 for non members (25% off) until Oct. 1.
In terms of best value, Red Dead Redemption 2 may be the best deal on this list: You’ll get dozens of hours out of the main story and easily over 100 if you’re looking to see everything there is to see. That’s especially true if you’re a PlayStation Plus member, as you’ll nab this blockbuster for $31. It’s $43 for everyone else until Oct.1.
A strange sci-fi mystery to be uncovered, Outer Wilds is set in a living breathing solar system that’s simultaneously small, but also tremendous in its ambition and execution. It’s a narrative-driven game and a unique one at that. You won’t forget it and for now it’s just $16.
Unravel is a charming platformer in which you play as an adorable piece of yarn. Unravel Two is its sequel, and introduces co-op play. Never mind if you’ve got no one to Unravel with, though, as you can also play the sequel solo. A bundle of both games is on sale for just $9 until Oct. 1.
Take-Two Interactive Software
Civilization is timeless. If you’ve not played it, Sid Meier’s strategy game is kind of like Age of Empires on steroids. Rather, Age of Empires is Civilization Lite. Civilization VI, the newest game in the storied franchise, adds many features to already deep gameplay. It’s $30 for PlayStation Plus members (50% off), or $45 for standard users (25% off) until Oct. 1.
The Aftermath Kollection includes Mortal Kombat 11 and two DLC packages, Kombat Pack and Aftermath. That’s a lot of killin’. Mortal Kombat 11 was a return to form for the series, earning a 9/10 on Gamespot, our sister site, upon its release last year. It’s $48 until Oct. 1, and an extra 20% off for PlayStation Plus members.
